The Story So Far – by Steve

The story of Helicopter Heaven got started a long long time ago when I myself was just a teenager. I recall endless hours of trying to learn how to fly remote control airplanes only to realize that I just did not have what it took took to not come home from the field each day without a mangled mess.

In my early 20’s I decided that gas powered helicopters looked like a good idea, you could keep them in one spot and not have to worry too much about the landings..ha ha…My first outing with the sticks and ping pong balls attached was an unreal experience. Let’s just say when I thought I was giving her a little gas, it was a bit much and this shuttle helicopter rose to a point where it was just a small speck in the sky. After much guess work and forehead sweating, I somehow (not quite sure how), got the helicopter back over the field, only to flip it completely over as I tried to land! So once again I had a very expensive piece of nothing to bring home! (I forgot to add that I had just gotten married 3 months prior and money was not something that I had much of.)

I put away my passion for things that flew until just a few years ago when somehow during a sleepless night I ran into an newsgroup on electric dual coax helicopters. The hype said, “Learn to fly in fifteen minutes” and it was only $100.00! I was older now, and a bit more secure financially, so I looked around on this newsgroup for some models to order. My first thought was “man, they all sure do look a lot alike”…they are all called “lama something”. So for the first time in my life I ordered the “cheaper” model and of course, requested overnight delivery along with a few extra batteries.

I was faithful to the instruction manual although my Chinese language skills were not so good, which led me back to the web to understand a few things. When I thought I had it all figured out, I turned on the transmitter, hooked up the battery and waited for this little green light to say “ready”….Yep, Ready. Well as the manual said, I put the throttle half way and sure enough this machine became airborne but it was certainly not under my control! It was spinning circles, swaying side to side, and, to make a long story short, I ended up smashing it into a table and basically destroyed the rotor head, blades, ect.

However, I refused to give up…I went online again and ordered a model from a company that sure looked like they were based in the United States. Three days later my 2nd dual coax helicopter arrived direct from China. I was a bit puzzled, but none the less thought that is where they all must be made, and this was just a good deal. After opening the box I found a dual coax helicopter with its back end snapped off, either due to rough handling or just the thin plastic it was made from. The company guaranteed the product and I called them, and their only reply was to “glue it back together.” Frustrated and confused I glued it back together, took it out of the box and throttled this thing into the air and once again it spun around one way, then the other way, then I just landed it, and said “Enough”!

I realized the only way I was going to figure this helicopter out was to get the small screw drivers out and start playing mixing and gyro man. After endless hours of doing this I FINALLY figured out how to make one of these fly straight off the ground with almost no rotation and side to side action. This was when I became addicted…

I ordered every model I could because I figured they all had different flying characteristics, and, of course, I was correct. One thing held true on all the ones I ordered….even though they advertised “factory flown, fly right out of the box”, that was never the case. The procedure was always out with the screw drivers and having to adjust all the gyro and mixer settings correctly. I made them all fly and spent endless hours through the winters of 2003 to the present flying these little machines in my living room while the snow fell and it was 40 degrees below zero. The beauty of electric flight….you can do it inside…what a concept!

I didn’t know that my 11 year old son at the time enjoyed watching me fly so much and always begged me to teach him to fly. I kept saying “no, it was too dangerous” but with my son, that excuse only lasts so long! So one day with me sitting behind him, he took this machine off the ground and flew it around the room like he had been doing it for years (Xbox 360 had something to do with this). Well then began an idea to start a company around these products were both loved.

But we wanted our company to be just a bit different then the rest. We didn’t want anybody to go through what poor Dad went through to learn! And there surely are a lot of Dad’s out there who will be buying these things, and if that first experience out of the box was anything like mine were, it would be a short lived hobby.

My son Alex said “Dad, lets offer a guarantee that if you buy a helicopter from us we promise you that when you take it out of the box, read through a few simple instructions, the machine will fly straight and true”. It was a great idea and I proved again while ordering sample machines from China that they just don’t tune them to fly out of the box.

When you buy from Helicopter Heaven, we will open up your model, test it through at least 3 battery cycles, and we will adjust it so when you get it, you will simply be in heaven that you have found a new hobby that we hope grows into a long time pleasure that you can share with others, maybe even your kids.

We hope you enjoy our website and certainly email or call with any questions.

Sincerely,
